Customer Rating: Summary: Very Brilliant Fourth From Birmingham Comment: You couldn't help but be impressed by this disc from EMI. Recorded in Symphony Hall, it has perfect amplitude and great direction from Sir Simon. This massive symphony is like a gilded puzzle box which when opened brings all manner of forces, good and evil, out into the world. Particularly striking in this rendition are two frantic episodes in the outer movements; the first, for this listener, brought to mind Genghis Khan's hordes sweeping over the Steppe. Anyway, not five stars, because the whole is just a little too clinical, perhaps because it is not live. On the other hand, I've got one of Rozhdestvensky's Fourths and the spell is broken by applause crashing into the quiet fade-out. If you want a digital studio Fourth, you could do worse.
Customer Rating: Summary: a vibrant and colourful version Comment: If you have listened before to other performances of this symphony you will find this to be a revelation, like going from black and white to colour. Although this is perhaps one of Shos. most difficult symphonies it all makes brilliant sense in the hands of Rattle. Buy it!
