Summary: Madcap fun
Comment: Bright and cheery wartime comedy, in which the boisterous lads of St Michaels are evacuated to a remote castle on the Isle Of Skye. Of course the place is haunted (and being Scotland, it naturally has to be a phantom piper whose appearance foretells doom to any who hear him), but it also comes complete with a Nazi spying ring. Will Hay is on top bumbling form as science teacher Mr Lamb, who gets Isaac Newton confused with William Tell, and he gets able support from a young and exuberant Charles Hawtrey, and John Laurie doing his wild-eyed mad Scotsman routine. Fast-paced, and quite atmospheric in its gothic Scottish castle setting. Nothing creaky about this comedy.

Summary: One of my favourite Will Hay films
Comment: Despite not featuring Moore Marriott or Graham Moffat, this is in many ways the peak of Will Hay's film career. Charles Hawtrey and Claude Hulbert provide quality support as competent schoolboys assisting an incompetent master, however, and make this a slightly more serious type of comedy than we are used to from the eccentric trio. There is atmosphere aplenty in the old dark house taken over for use as a wartime school, and this even has a bit of a Scooby-Doo feel to it. The advantage it has is that the comedy is counterbalanced by the ghost/Nazi/detective story, giving you a drama with characters you like and a comedy with a near-realistic setting. Despite these films' sporadic television appearances these days, I don't think it has dated as much as many war time films, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good laugh and a good ghost story.

Summary: A fast paced comedy-thriller.
Comment: They don't make em like this any more! A fast paced comedy-thriller which shows Will Hay at his best. You could argue that being in black and white adds to the atmosphere of this wartime ghost story. Some great comedy moments, which I never get tired of seeing, spiced up with a dose of wartime espionage. Great viewing on a stormy night with a well laden supper tray!
