Customer Rating: Summary: Don't waste your money Comment: First of all, I want to correct the product description which (at the time of writing this review) is for Mission Combat Force (PC CD). Carrier Strike Force is an add-on that includes three new aircraft (Sea Harrier, F35 Joint Strike Fighter and Dassualt Rafale), and the three aircraft carriers they operate from. It also comes with six new missions. My reason for buying this was the fact that two of the aircraft are meant to be vertical takeoff, and thought this would be an interesting add-on (even though previous version of Flight Simulator never did a very good at simulating it).
The carriers themselves are reasonably nice to look at, but aren't really of much better quality than the default FSX Acceleration carrier. The aircraft are to be frank, awful. All of them look like they belong in FS2002 or earlier, both outside and inside- the Harriers rudder actually turns more than 180 degrees! The virtual cockpits are a joke; textures are drab and low resolution. Worst of all though, both the Harrier and the F35 are virtually unflyable. When attempting to land, at as much as 30kts they could start nosediving, spin out of control or any number of other things. The missions are slightly better. They are actual combat missions (which is very new for MS Flight Simulator), and in some ways they are quite fun. What ruins the missions is annoying and loud background music which I haven't been able to switch off- I ended up turning my speakers off!
Carrier Strike Force was a great idea. It was always going to be difficult with FSX not providing a good platform for simulating vertical takeoff/landing- the fact the the Harrier and F35 are at times near impossible to control can be forgiven. What can't is the quality of the aircraft themselves- both visually, technically and not to mention the sound, which sounds like the default Learjet. If you could download this add-on for free I wouldn't recomend it. To spend money on it would be mad.
