Customer Rating: Summary: Baroque curio? Baroque ambient? Comment: It's an odd disc and no mistake, but make no mistake that the sound of the viola d'amore (a near extinct instrument) is lovely: warm, spacious, and slightly other worldly.
The repetoire is a mixture of historical and contemporary - some from the brief period the instrument was in use, and some written specially for Garth Knox.
It's hard to know who exactly to recommend this to! I bought it alongside the film soundtrack 'Tous Les Matins du Monde' and that kinda works. If you like baroque, generally, or the recordings of Jordi Savall in particular, you might like this more contemporary variation on a theme. But if you like more challenging contemporary compositions, or ambient music, then you might like this too.
It's a baroque curio with one foot in the past and one in the present. Maybe it's a new genre: Baroque Ambient!
