Summary: Useless Packaging
Comment: Nice music. I really should give it up though after having countless versions of most of this material but, the issue here is packaging. The imbeciles who designed this must either a) not own any CDs or b) couldn't give a monkey's over whether what CDs they do own are covered in finger marks or scratches. To get the Cds out you have to somehow prise open the sleevs and....ooops!...the sleeve splits. Pathetic. What's wrong with a regular jewel case?

Summary: Pink Floyd in all but name...
Comment: A wonderful chance to hear the late Richard Wright along with what is really Pink Floyd. The first CD has some bits of Dark Side (if you like that sort of thing), followed by the whole of David Gilmours latest CD (on an Island) - which is OKish.
However, the second CD (for an Olde Pink Floyd fan like me) is utter bliss.
"Shine On..." is spot-on with the slow, gentle intro, and Mr. Gilmour's trademark fluid guitar.
"Astronomie D..." with vocals that are eerily like Syd's.
"Fat Old Sun" - one of my favourite Floyd eras is Atom Heart Mother, and this is a superb rendition (with added Rock and Roll as a coda)
And then "Echoes...", at the very very first "ping" you know where you are, this was amazing, including the wonderful rolling bass-line.
"Wish You Were Here" - excellent, "A Great Day for Freedom" - very apposite for Gdansk! and then, as always, "Comfortably Numb".
Bliss! Although I am not sure I will be playing CD1 much.

Summary: Just go and buy it!
Comment: This set is worth the price of admission just to hear Dave dust off Fat Old Sun, which was a shameful omission from PF's Echoes collection. A beautiful melody which is played acoustically but just when you think it's over Dave plays a blistering electric solo. Just awesome!

Summary: Lose the orchestra
Comment: The only explanation for the presence of the orchestra on this album is that Dave Gilmour (he'll always be 'Dave' to me) can afford it. It adds nothing to the music and detracts from Rick Wright's keyboards, which have been more than adequate to provide depth and majesty to Pink Floyd for the last 40 years.

I increasingly found myself thinking the presence of the orchestra was an insult to the man who has contributed so much to so many great songs.

But, rather irritatingly, when Gilmour launches into a solo, it's bloody magic.

I bought the two CD, two DVD version and the highlights are on DVD two - the three jams filmed in Gilmour's barn are nothing short of brilliant, as is some of the concert footage from the BBC Radio 2 session.

But that damned orchestra means Dave only gets three stars from this reviewer.

Summary: Aural Magic ..
Comment: This is probably one of the best produced live albums I've heard but that is irrelvant beside the sheer quality of the music. A big part of the songs are all of the latest Dave Gilmour album 'The Island' and I have to say they sound soooo much better live. On the studio album there is quite a low key , almost sad feeling. Live on this CD they fit very well instead with the older Pink Floyd ones. I think my studio album will be quietly filed away. The Pink Floyd songs are just outstanding - the version of Comfortably Numb is just brilliant. I had it cranked up in the car and its just a great soundtrack for driving. Other standouts are Time, Echoes (all 25 minutes of it..) and what for me is one of their best songs 'Wish You Were Here' - made even more aposite with the death of Rick Wright
A great album and a potential classic
