Summary: This is no Gift.
Comment: The voice of later day Fleetwood Mac and maker of several great solo albums.

This however aint one of them, to weird for my liking and one which despite several attempts at listening will sit and gather dust on the shelf.

Summary: A real gift
Comment: Back in the days of the early 1980s, there was this strange invention known as the audio cassette tape. My father used to play these strange devices in the car when I was a little boy and between the soft rock stylings of 'Queen', 'ELO' and 'Rainbow' there was 'Fleetwood Mac'. From an early age, I was introduced to this eclectic band of musicians and I had no choice but to love their exceptionally talented and versatile sound. Growing up and discovering my own sound as it were, I always had time for them and continually followed their output in their different incarnations, but the main draw for me has to be their in/out enigmatic leading man; Lindsey Buckingham.

His sound was both odd and addictive - a true individual and for me, the greatest guitarist around. I cannot believe he has been recording for this long and isn't held in such high regard as his peers - he is such an all round talent and when you listen to him, you feel its all 'very real'. Very real, indeed.

Which brings me to 'Gift of Screws' - another faultless and fearless release. Yes, its a little more mainstream and less of a dense experience than his other earlier solo efforts, but everything comes together and works beautifully. His layered vocals and intricate guitar playing collide to create a mini classic album that is both beautiful, sad and joyous at the same time. The single 'Did You Miss Me' is a good introduction to the album, but gems such as 'Time Precious Time', 'Wait For You' and 'Love Runs Deeper' are superb in every way and make you want to play it on an endless loop. It's a highly recommended release, and if you wan to listen to a pure talent at the top of his game, 'Gift of Screws' is for you.

Which brings me back to those times when I was a child and my dad played 'Tusk' to me as we drove. Thanks for introducing this to me, Dad - I know we're still playing them, and we always will.

Summary: Disappointing
Comment: There is nothing new here, this is familiar Fleetwood Mac territory without the bands collective talent to raise it above the ordinary. Previous solo projects by Buckingham have gone on to become Mac albums (such as Tango in the Night) and it's easy to imagine this collection was written with that in mind. As it is Buckingham struggles to do the material justice on his own and, maybe recognising this, tries too hard in the production and looses any subtlty that may have been there. Disappointing.

Summary: Genius
Comment: As innovative, personal and perfect an offering I have heard for many a year. Masterful songwriting, beautifully produced, with each track a stand-out, yet the running order is total synergy. Buckingham returns with a tour de force. Pure Genius...buy it, you won't be dissapointed.

Summary: Competent but very unremarkable
Comment: I am a new listener to Lindsey Buckingham, having bought the album based on some favourable reviews in the music press.

The guitar playing is excellent and is clearly Buckingham's forte. However, it is also, for the most part, quite conventional. The song structures are generally formulaic, and there is little here that has not been done a hundred times before. To describe this artist as a 'mad scientist' is an affront to such true innovators as Tom Waits and Emiliana Torrini (whose excellent new album was also released this month). Buckingham's vocals and lyrics, which are often swamped in the excessively reverbed production, are also standard singer-songwriter fare, and most of the songs are rather, for want of a better word, cheesy.

This album will no doubt please longstanding devotees of Buckingham and Fleetwood Mac, but it will slide off the backs of more discerning listeners who seek something more original.
