Summary: Double Standards
Comment: I heard a sneak preview of "Triste" on a jazz programme on the radio last Sunday night. I was immediately seduced and ordered the album on-line. It arrived yesterday and I haven't stopped playing it!
I've seen Martin Taylor play live several times and he has GOT to be the greatest jazz guitarist - ever. He manages to play basslines, partial rhythmn and melody all simultaneously making him sound like two guitarists playing together.
On this album he has recorded some jazz standards then overdubbed himself improvising over the original track, so now he sounds like THREE guitarists all playing together.
The clarity and tone of his Vanden guitar is phenomenal - this recording is so well produced, no gimmicky digital effects - Taylor's fingers do the talking and boy have they got a lot to say!
My favourite tracks are "Drop me off in Harlem" and "Triste", a latin American type groove (reminiscent of "How insensitive" and "Girl from Ipenema").
If you are into Martin Taylor then this album is a MUST. I hope he makes more like it.

Summary: Stunning
Comment: Martin is without question the greatest living guitarist (by some distance) and probably the greatest ever. The way he simultaneously holds down a bass line, comps a rhythm, and peels of a ringing melody is impossible but he does it ! Joe Pass is the only one I can think of who could even dream of playing 3 parts at once. This album you get 2 for the price of one i.e. a selection of duets played by Martin overdubbed by Martin. Its all total quality - Toots Thileman's Bluesette possibly the stand out track. Every album Martin does something different and never disappoints. Just buy it.
